But scanning doesn’t work. I had been using PaperPort 12 SE software that came with the printer to facilitate scanning.

My problem was partially fixed. The problem with CC4 is 1 it does not have a text searchable PDF option which PaperPort had and 2 the optional settings aren’t as versatile when scanning photos. Unfortunately, “Searchable” doesn’t come up as an option in the drop-down menu — I scrolled up and back and there are none hidden.
